HCG Diet Description and Explanation
How I found the HCG Diet
I was watching T.V. and as I was absent mindedly flipping through the channels I came across Kevin Trudeau. He was enthusiastically talking about the HCG Diet detailed in his new book, “The Weight Loss Cure ‘They’ Don’t Want You To Know About”. He talked about how he had come across an actual “cure” for being overweight and was peddling his book for nearly free (but really seemed to me to be selling a subscription to a membership site).
But much of what he said captivated my mind. I am overweight (actually obese). So I took a small leap and bought the book at a local WalMart. I read the book in very short order. As far as books go, it really isn’t that great…but the message really got me thinking.
In a nutshell, here is the “weight loss cure” that I call the HCG Diet.
A patient under the watchful eye of a doctor undergoes a period of about 30-45 days where the diet is restricted to about 500 calories a day. In addition to the very low calorie diet (VLCD), daily injections of Human Chorio-Gonadotropin (HCG) are administered. This combination results in what seems to be an average of .5 to 1 pounds or more a day depending on the starting condition of the dieter.
It seems that the HCG Diet works on the concept that the HCG mobilizes the secure fat stores in the body and makes it available for use as energy. Since caloric intake is around 500 calories per day, the body burns the fat off.
To me, this makes perfect sense. I am not a doctor so I have no real basis other than my own observations and ideas but it really does make sense to me. HCG is produced in the placenta while a woman is pregnant. For the most part, it only appears in significant levels during a pregnancy. It seems that one function of the HCG is to make a stable environment for the baby to grow in.
Since the beginning of time we have experienced periods of both abundance and scarcity of foods. Our bodies protect the baby during gestation from these fluctuations by mobilizing the secure fat stores and making it available to the fetus so it is never starved while it undergoes that delicate and all important period of growth.
This diet program was first developed by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons. He details the program in his publication “Pounds and Inches: A New Approach To Obesity”. This manuscript does a very good job in discussing the program, how to do it, and what one can expect when doing it. This is a must read but for a primer, follow these links to learn more about this diet.
